Pennsylvania General Assembly: End $2.9B in state subsidies for fossil fuel & use $ for education

Check out this petition calling for PA to stop funding fossil fuel companies!

Original petition here:

“PennFuture, using figures from Governor Corbett’s own budget, added up the costs of subsidies to the coal and oil industry. $2.9 billion annually.

Last year Corbett cut $860 million from PA public schools. This year he is calling for an additional cuts of $100 million. His budget calls for steep cuts to higher education – an average of 25 percent, for state universities after a cut last year of 20%.

Class sizes are increasing. Programs are ending. Libraries, special education, and after school activities are being cut. Schools are closed. Thousands of education jobs were lost.

Eliminating some of these subsidies to industries that are thriving would provide all the money we need for education.”

The Civilization of Oil, in Pictures

Check out this beautiful and frightening slideshow from Edward Burtynsky. Our economy, infrastructure and civilization have been built on a fundamentally unstable foundation–the need for cheap and plentiful fossil fuels. The end of this economy is coming. Will higher education lead the way toward a livable future, or continue to deny the magnitude of this crisis?
